Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ÂĽ tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 ÂĽ cups granulated sugar
- 1 large egg + 1 egg yolk
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- ½ tsp almond extract (optional)
- 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
- Red gel food coloring
- 1 tsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp water
- 4 oz white fondant
- Blue gel food coloring
- Cornstarch or powdered sugar (for rolling)
- Edible glue or a dab of water
- Small star-shaped cutter (about 1 inch)
Instructions
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl, beat softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg, yolk, vanilla, and almond extract; mix well. Gradually combine the dry ingredients with the wet mixture and chill for at least an hour.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper. Roll chilled dough into balls, coat in powdered sugar, flatten slightly, then create an indent in the center.
- Mix red gel food coloring with cornstarch and water to make the crinkle paste; apply it to each cookie's indent.
- Bake for 11–13 minutes until set. Cool on wire racks.
- For stars, tint fondant blue and roll out both blue and white fondant; cut into star shapes. Attach stars to cooled cookies using edible glue or water.
