Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, garlic powder (if using), and black pepper.
- Stir in shredded cheddar cheese and chopped chives until evenly distributed.
- Cut in cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually incorporate buttermilk until a sticky dough forms—do not overmix.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf about 2 inches thick and score an 'X' on top.
- Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
- Cool for 10 minutes before slicing; serve warm.
